British Sailors Under Fire: A Close Encounter with Russian Military

Retired British couple Alan and Jane Kelvey experienced a harrowing incident when their yacht, Bright Future, came under fire from a Russian warship in the English Channel. The couple, sailing from Lymington to Cherbourg, reported that they were not on a collision course and had followed all maritime regulations. Despite their claims, the Russian military accused them of being on a ‘dangerous course’ and fired warning shots after failing to establish radio contact.

The Kelveys described the moment as terrifying, stating that the Russian warship, Admiral Grigorovich, fired four to five shots into the air without prior warning. They had planned to pass the warship at a safe distance but altered their course slightly upon hearing the ship’s horn signals. The incident lasted about ten minutes, leaving them shocked and prompting them to call the coastguard for assistance.

This encounter raises concerns about maritime safety and the potential for miscommunication in tense geopolitical climates. The couple believes their experience may be linked to recent tensions in the Channel, particularly following the seizure of a Russian oil tanker by British forces. The Ministry of Defence has classified this as an isolated incident, but it underscores the risks faced by civilian sailors in contested waters.

As international tensions continue to simmer, incidents like this highlight the vulnerabilities of recreational sailors and the importance of clear communication between military and civilian vessels. The Kelveys’ experience serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of maritime navigation in areas where military operations are ongoing.
