France is taking a groundbreaking step in pest control by releasing millions of sterile male tiger mosquitoes to combat the invasive species. This initiative, led by the company Terratis, aims to reduce the population of these mosquitoes, which are known carriers of diseases like dengue and Zika. By sterilising male mosquitoes through X-ray exposure, they can mate with wild females without producing offspring, gradually diminishing the mosquito population in affected areas.
Currently, Terratis produces about 1.5 million sterile males weekly, with plans to scale up to 40 million in the next two years. This method, known as the sterile insect technique, is touted as environmentally friendly and chemical-free, appealing to those concerned about traditional pest control methods. The programme is already in action in Montpellier, where technicians release thousands of these mosquitoes in targeted neighbourhoods.
