AI in Healthcare: Clinicians Demand More as Hospitals Struggle

A recent report highlights a growing gap between clinicians’ enthusiasm for AI in healthcare and their hospitals’ ability to implement these technologies. While over 80% of healthcare professionals express optimism about AI improving patient outcomes, many feel their organisations are lagging behind in providing necessary tools and training. This disconnect is prompting clinicians to turn to personal AI solutions, indicating a significant shift in how healthcare is delivered.

The Future Health Index 2026 report reveals that nearly half of clinicians save substantial time on administrative tasks due to AI, which they can redirect towards patient care. However, the rapid adoption of AI tools raises concerns about the adequacy of training and support within healthcare systems. Many professionals report that training for these tools is inconsistent, leading to a reliance on personal devices to meet their needs.

As AI continues to reshape workflows, clinicians anticipate significant changes in their roles. While 96% expect their work to evolve, there are fears about losing essential clinical skills. Despite these challenges, the majority believe that human interaction will remain crucial, with 86% insisting on the necessity of human oversight for AI outputs.

The implications of this report are profound. As healthcare systems grapple with the pace of AI integration, the demand for effective training and support becomes critical. Addressing these needs could enhance patient care and alleviate the pressures faced by healthcare professionals, ultimately leading to a more efficient healthcare system.
