Increased Roadside Checks Target Drink and Drug Drivers in North Wales

North Wales Police are intensifying roadside checks to combat drink and drug-driving as summer festivities increase. With warmer weather and major events, officers are on high alert for impaired drivers, warning that the consequences of being caught can be severe, including driving bans and hefty fines.

The police have reported a significant rise in arrests, with 883 for drink-driving and 1,317 for drug-driving last year. This uptick highlights a growing concern for road safety, particularly during social gatherings where alcohol consumption is prevalent. Inspector Leigh Evans emphasised that driving under the influence remains a leading cause of serious accidents.

A critical aspect of the campaign is raising awareness about the ‘morning after’ effect, where individuals may still be over the legal limit the next day. This misconception can lead to dangerous situations on the roads, as many underestimate how long substances remain in their system.

The police are urging the public to report suspected impaired drivers and to consider alternatives like designated drivers or public transport. The message is clear: one poor decision can have life-altering consequences for everyone involved, making it imperative to prioritise safety over convenience.
