Kenya’s High Court Demands Transparency on Ebola Facility Plans

Kenya’s High Court has mandated the government to disclose details regarding a proposed Ebola quarantine facility linked to the United States. This decision follows widespread protests in Nanyuki, where demonstrators expressed concerns over the facility’s potential health risks. The court has temporarily halted the establishment of the site, citing public health safety as a primary concern.

The facility, intended to treat asymptomatic individuals exposed to Ebola, has faced criticism from health advocates who argue that Kenya’s healthcare system is not equipped to handle such a project. The court’s ruling requires the government to reveal agreements, health assessments, and operational protocols related to the facility, highlighting the need for transparency in public health initiatives.

Critics, including the Katiba Institute and the Law Society of Kenya, have raised alarms about the lack of clarity surrounding the deal between the US and Kenya. They argue that without proper oversight, the facility could pose significant risks to the local population, especially amid ongoing outbreaks in neighbouring countries.

President William Ruto has defended the initiative as part of a broader emergency response strategy, emphasizing Kenya’s long-standing health partnership with the US. However, the court’s ruling underscores the importance of public engagement and scrutiny in health policy decisions, particularly in light of recent health crises.
