M27 Speed Limit Returns After Two Years of Roadworks

Motorists on the M27 will soon be able to drive at the full 70mph speed limit for the first time in over two years. This change comes as extensive roadworks, which began in February 2024, finally reach completion. The previous 50mph restriction, implemented due to resurfacing and safety upgrades, will be lifted, marking a significant improvement for drivers who have faced delays and disruptions during the construction period.

The £83 million project not only involved renewing the motorway surface but also included major safety enhancements and drainage improvements. The use of low-noise asphalt aims to reduce traffic noise for nearby communities, while new safety barriers have been installed to enhance protection for motorists. These upgrades are expected to create smoother and safer journeys for years to come.

The prolonged roadworks have had a notable impact on local businesses, particularly freight operators who rely on the M27 for transporting goods. With the speed limit returning to normal, these businesses can expect improved logistics and reduced travel times, which is crucial for their operations.

While the main speed limit will be reinstated, motorists should be aware that some temporary traffic management measures will remain in place, including a 50mph limit around junction 8 due to ongoing bridge maintenance. Drivers are advised to stay updated on any further changes to traffic arrangements as the situation evolves.
