London Mayor Sadiq Khan has unveiled a £500,000 fund aimed at enhancing outdoor dining experiences across the city. This initiative will support 15 projects in 13 boroughs, promoting al fresco dining, outdoor events, and extended opening hours during the summer and autumn months. The funding is part of a broader strategy to invigorate London’s night-time economy, which Khan argues has been stifled by outdated licensing regulations and vocal opposition from a minority of residents.
The new licensing powers will allow City Hall to take a more active role in overseeing these decisions, which Khan believes will benefit businesses and the wider community. He criticizes the previous system for being overly complex and costly, often favouring a small group of residents over the interests of the majority. By streamlining the licensing process, the Mayor hopes to encourage more businesses to thrive and contribute to the vibrancy of London.
Khan’s vision includes transforming town centres with outdoor dining, markets, and live performances, aiming for the largest summer of al fresco dining in the capital’s history. This initiative not only seeks to boost the economy but also to enhance social interactions and the overall atmosphere of the city.
Additionally, the Mayor has introduced the Weekend Hopper offer, allowing unlimited bus and tram journeys for a single fare on weekends. This initiative, alongside the al fresco dining fund, reflects a commitment to making London a more accessible and enjoyable city for both residents and visitors alike.
