As Cyprus nears the end of its rotating EU presidency, Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna highlights the significance of opening accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova. This development is seen as a pivotal moment for both nations, which are seeking closer ties with the European Union amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Raouna emphasizes that Cyprus will maintain an ambitious agenda until the presidency concludes, aiming for further advancements in the EU membership process for these countries. This commitment reflects Cyprus’s role as a facilitator in EU discussions, particularly in light of the current challenges facing the bloc.

Additionally, Cyprus is positioning itself as a mediator regarding the EU’s long-term budget, proposing a moderate cut as a compromise. This approach not only showcases Cyprus’s diplomatic efforts but also highlights the delicate balance required in EU negotiations, especially with multiple member states involved.

As Cyprus prepares to hand over the presidency to Ireland, the outcomes of these negotiations could have lasting implications for EU expansion and regional stability, influencing how member states perceive future accession processes and the EU’s strategic direction in Eastern Europe.
