UN Warns of Imminent Atrocities in Sudan’s El-Obeid

The United Nations Security Council has raised alarms over the potential for mass atrocities in El-Obeid, Sudan, as paramilitary forces advance towards the city. This warning comes amid ongoing conflict between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Army, which has resulted in significant casualties and displacement since April 2023.

El-Obeid, strategically located in the Kordofan region, has been encircled by RSF forces for months, heightening fears of a humanitarian disaster. The UN has described the situation as the world’s largest displacement and hunger crisis, with over 11 million people affected and nearly half of Sudan’s population facing food insecurity.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has urged the international community to intervene and prevent further bloodshed, referencing the horrific events in El Fasher last year, where thousands were killed in a short span. The Security Council’s statement reflects a growing concern that the violence could escalate further, impacting not only Sudan but also regional stability.

As the RSF continues its assault, the implications for civilians are dire. The international community’s response will be crucial in determining whether El-Obeid can avoid the same fate as other besieged areas, where the hallmarks of genocide have already been observed.
