EU Border System Faces Major Challenges Ahead of Summer Travel

As summer approaches, the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) is under scrutiny for its inefficiency, raising concerns for travellers. The president of ACI Europe, Stefan Schulte, has highlighted that the system, which requires biometric data from passengers, is failing to function properly. With peak travel times approaching, long queues are expected, causing frustration among holidaymakers.

Recent incidents, including flights leaving without passengers due to border delays, underscore the urgency of the situation. Airlines like Ryanair have advised travellers to arrive at airports three hours early, a significant change to typical travel routines. This shift reflects a growing anxiety about the reliability of border processing during the busy holiday season.

Schulte has called for flexibility in suspending the EES to mitigate chaos, emphasizing the need for a more efficient system that respects travellers. The European Commission has allowed for temporary suspensions, but the decision rests with individual governments, leading to inconsistent responses across the EU.

With the summer peak extending beyond September, the potential for a complete breakdown of the system looms large. This could have lasting implications for the EU’s reputation as a travel destination, affecting not only tourists but also the economies reliant on tourism and transport.
