A group of three friends from Dromore, County Down, are gearing up for the Denis Rankin Round (DRR), a daunting 90km mountain running challenge in the Mourne Mountains. Set to be completed within 24 hours, this event not only tests physical endurance but also fosters camaraderie among participants. The trio, part of the Lisburn Triathlon Club, views the challenge as their biggest personal test yet, highlighting the importance of support and teamwork in overcoming obstacles.
The DRR route includes all peaks in the Mournes over 400m, with a total ascent of 6,500m. Participants must navigate this demanding terrain, which requires extensive preparation and training. The friends have undertaken multiple recce runs to familiarise themselves with the course, ensuring they are ready for both daylight and night conditions. Their strategy includes a support team to provide food and supplies at checkpoints, enhancing their chances of success.
This challenge reflects a growing trend of outdoor activities that gained popularity during the pandemic, as people sought ways to improve their mental health through physical exercise. The trio’s journey from casual runners to tackling extreme challenges illustrates how personal goals can evolve, pushing individuals to explore their limits.
As they prepare for the race, the friends emphasise the joy of shared experiences in nature. Their story serves as an inspiration for others to pursue their passions, no matter how daunting they may seem, reinforcing the idea that personal growth often lies just beyond one’s comfort zone.
