Inquest Jury to Examine Police Role in Noah Donohoe’s Death

The inquest into the death of 14-year-old Noah Donohoe is now considering whether errors by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) contributed to his tragic fate. Noah went missing in June 2020, and his body was discovered in an underground water tunnel six days later. The jury’s task is to evaluate the PSNI’s actions during the investigation, specifically if any police omissions or mistakes could have played a role in his death.

Coroner Mr Justice Rooney has instructed the jury to assess the police’s response to the information available at the time. This includes examining over 600 calls received during the search, which was unprecedented for the PSNI. Criticism has been directed at the police for alleged failings in their investigation, with the senior investigator apologising for missed opportunities that could have aided in locating Noah sooner.

The inquest has also highlighted concerns regarding safety measures around the tunnel system where Noah was found. While the Department for Infrastructure maintains that access to the site is restricted, local residents have indicated familiarity with the area, raising questions about the effectiveness of safety protocols. The jury must weigh these factors against the backdrop of a chaotic week for the PSNI, who were managing multiple missing person cases simultaneously.

As the jury deliberates, the implications of their findings could extend beyond this case, potentially influencing public trust in police procedures and safety regulations concerning vulnerable individuals. The outcome may also prompt discussions on how emergency responses are managed in high-pressure situations, particularly in missing person cases.
