The United Nations has issued a stark warning about the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential to exacerbate global inequality. A recent report from the UN’s Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence highlights that as AI technology evolves without a cohesive regulatory framework, the gap between wealthy and developing nations could widen significantly.

The report notes that the US and China dominate AI capabilities, controlling approximately 90% of the world’s leading supercomputers. This concentration of power means that developing countries, lacking the necessary infrastructure and expertise, may struggle to harness AI effectively, leaving them further behind in the global economy.

Moreover, the report raises concerns about the risks associated with AI, including the potential for misuse in generating harmful content and spreading disinformation. As AI systems become more autonomous, the challenge of monitoring and regulating these technologies intensifies, necessitating urgent action from governments worldwide.

The UN calls for stronger international cooperation and the establishment of shared standards to ensure that AI benefits are equitably distributed. Without immediate intervention, the promise of AI could turn into a tool for deepening existing inequalities, affecting millions globally.
