Luxury Brands Under Scrutiny for Labour Exploitation in Italy

Italian police have launched a significant investigation into luxury brands like Bulgari and Chanel, raiding their offices over allegations of labour abuse. This probe focuses on the use of subcontractors who employ Chinese workers under exploitative conditions, highlighting a troubling trend in the fashion industry.

The investigation, led by Milan prosecutors, has revealed that several high-profile brands, including Prada and Givenchy, are implicated in a system where subcontracting leads to a chain of exploitation. This practice raises serious questions about the ethical sourcing of materials and the treatment of workers in the luxury sector.

Previously, brands such as Loro Piana faced temporary judicial administration due to similar concerns, which were lifted only after they committed to improving oversight of their supply chains. The current raids signal a renewed effort to hold these companies accountable for their labour practices.

As the Italian government defends the reputation of its luxury brands, the ongoing scrutiny may lead to stricter regulations and a shift in consumer expectations regarding ethical production. This could ultimately reshape the landscape of the luxury market, pushing brands to adopt more transparent and humane practices.
