Andy Burnham’s Challenging Start as Prime Minister

Andy Burnham is set to enter Downing Street with the lowest polling share of any incoming Prime Minister, at just 21%. This precarious position, highlighted by polling expert Sir John Curtice, indicates that Burnham will face significant challenges in establishing his leadership and gaining public support.

Despite a brief boost for Labour following Sir Keir Starmer’s resignation, the party’s overall support remains historically low. Burnham’s situation is compounded by the fact that he inherits a party that is not maintaining a dominant position in Parliament, which could hinder his ability to push through policies effectively.

Curtice suggests that while Burnham may experience a honeymoon period typical of new leaders, the long-term recovery for Labour is uncertain. The polling indicates that Labour’s recent gains might have peaked, making it crucial for Burnham to strategise carefully to avoid further decline.

Additionally, the Conservatives are showing signs of recovery, with their support rising to 20%. This shift could complicate Burnham’s efforts to solidify Labour’s position, as he navigates a political landscape that is becoming increasingly competitive.
