France Leads with Social Media Ban for Under-15s

France’s parliament has passed a groundbreaking law prohibiting children under 15 from using social media platforms, making it the first EU country to implement such a ban. This legislation, championed by President Emmanuel Macron, aims to protect young users from the potential harms of digital content, particularly as concerns about mental health rise globally.

The law will be enacted in two phases: starting September 1, children under 15 will be unable to create new accounts, while existing accounts will be closed by January 2027. This initiative reflects a growing trend among nations to regulate social media access for minors, responding to increasing evidence of its negative impact on youth.

Critics argue the ban may infringe on online anonymity and question its enforceability, but many parents and child advocates support the move as a necessary step to safeguard children. Macron’s administration believes this legislation sets a precedent for other countries, positioning France as a leader in child protection online.

As the law awaits constitutional review, its implementation could reshape how children interact with technology, potentially influencing similar policies in other nations. The implications of this ban extend beyond France, highlighting a significant shift in how societies view the responsibilities of tech companies towards young users.
