The Danger of Normalising Extreme Weather Events

As Britain experiences its hottest summer on record, the term ‘unprecedented’ is becoming alarmingly commonplace in discussions about climate change. This repeated use may dull our perception of the severity of these events, leading us to accept extreme weather as the new normal. The psychological impact of this shift can be profound, as we may fail to recognise the urgency of the climate crisis while still feeling its negative effects.

The phenomenon known as ‘shifting baseline syndrome’ suggests that our standards for what is considered normal are constantly changing. As extreme weather becomes more frequent, we may not only stop finding it remarkable but also become less motivated to demand action. This complacency can hinder our response to climate change, as we might overlook the need for significant changes in policy and behaviour.

Interestingly, while our perception of extreme temperatures may diminish, the discomfort they cause does not. We can still feel the heat and its consequences, even if we no longer see them as extraordinary. This disconnect poses a risk, as it may lead to inaction in the face of ongoing environmental degradation.

To combat this trend, we must be mindful of the language we use. Retaining the historical significance of terms like ‘unprecedented’ is crucial in conveying the seriousness of climate events. If we allow these words to lose their impact, we risk becoming desensitised to the urgent need for change in our approach to climate action.
