Controversy Surrounds AI Art in Belfast Exhibition

The inclusion of AI-generated artwork in a Belfast exhibition has sparked significant debate among local artists. Deirdre Robb, chief executive of Belfast Exposed gallery, defended the decision, stating that the AI images raise important questions about creativity and misogyny. The exhibition features works by nine MFA graduates from Ulster University, with artist Jonny Sheridan explaining that creating the pieces involved extensive thought and revision, contrary to the notion that AI art is merely a product of simple prompts.

Critics, including local artists like Chloe Austin, argue that AI threatens traditional creative jobs, claiming it devalues the labour of human artists. Austin pointed out that AI lacks the cultural and emotional connections that make art meaningful. Others, like photographer Brendan Harkin, have called for a ‘No AI’ policy, citing ethical concerns and the environmental impact of AI technologies.

The controversy reflects a broader tension in the art world about the role of technology in creativity. As AI continues to evolve, its implications for artistic expression and employment in creative sectors remain uncertain. The debate raises questions about the future of art and the value placed on human creativity versus machine-generated content.

As galleries increasingly incorporate AI art, the ongoing discussions could influence public perception and policy regarding the use of technology in creative industries. This situation highlights a pivotal moment for artists and institutions navigating the intersection of art and technology.
