New Photography Ban at British Museum’s Bayeux Tapestry Exhibition

The British Museum has implemented a ban on photography of the Bayeux Tapestry, a significant medieval embroidery, due to visitor congestion. This decision comes after curators observed that visitors stopping to take pictures were causing delays for others waiting to view the exhibit. The tapestry, which is on display in the UK for the first time, depicts the events leading to the Norman conquest of England in 1066 and is a major draw for tourists.

Visitors are now required to move continuously along the 68-metre artwork, which is displayed in a straight line, unlike its original horseshoe-shaped gallery in Bayeux, France. The museum aims to enhance the experience for all attendees by ensuring a steady flow of foot traffic. This change highlights the challenges of managing high visitor interest while maintaining accessibility to cultural treasures.

The tapestry is on loan until July 2027, following a Franco-British agreement that included significant logistical planning and funding. While ticket prices have drawn criticism for being higher than those in France, the museum is working to balance costs with visitor experience. Tickets are currently sold out until the end of December, with more expected to be released soon.

For those unable to secure tickets, a full-scale replica of the tapestry is available for free viewing at Tewkesbury Abbey and Reading Museum, providing an alternative for enthusiasts of this historic artwork.
