Essex Police has launched a significant operation targeting driving offences across the county, resulting in 28 arrests and 19 vehicles seized. This crackdown, which involved proactive stops and the use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, highlights a dual focus on road safety and immigration enforcement.

One notable incident involved a driver who attempted to flee after being stopped for not wearing a seatbelt, leading to the discovery of cocaine and subsequent tasering by officers. The operation also included checks on delivery drivers, revealing concerns about illegal working practices within the gig economy.

In total, 153 vehicles were stopped, with 48 traffic tickets issued and multiple arrests for drug-related offences. The police’s collaboration with the Home Office aims to address not only road safety but also potential exploitation of vulnerable workers.

Sergeant Dean Young emphasised the importance of these operations in keeping Essex safe, warning that those using the roads for criminal activities will be targeted. The initiative reflects a growing trend in law enforcement to tackle interconnected issues of road safety and immigration compliance.
