Record Domestic Abuse During World Cup Raises Concerns

Domestic abuse incidents in the UK surged during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, reaching alarming new heights. Police recorded 384 football-related domestic abuse incidents, a 9% increase from the previous Euro 2024 tournament and a staggering 223% rise compared to the 2022 World Cup. This spike highlights a troubling trend where major sporting events correlate with increased domestic violence, often exacerbated by alcohol consumption.

The decision to extend pub opening hours until 5am during the tournament has been scrutinised for its role in escalating violence. Chief Constable Mark Roberts of the National Police Chiefs’ Council noted that the late announcement left police unprepared, impacting their ability to manage potential risks effectively. This lack of foresight in licensing decisions raises questions about public safety during future events.

Roberts pointed out that while football acts as a catalyst for violence, the underlying issues are rooted in alcohol and drug consumption. The increase in incidents as England progressed through the tournament underscores the need for a more proactive approach to managing public safety during such high-profile events.

As authorities reflect on these statistics, there is a pressing need for better planning and consultation regarding licensing laws to mitigate the negative impacts of future tournaments. The significant rise in domestic abuse incidents serves as a stark reminder of the societal challenges that accompany large-scale sporting events.
