Millionaire’s £1m Wine Collection Ruined by Faulty Fridge

A millionaire tailor is suing a fridge supplier after a faulty cooling system allegedly ruined his £1 million wine collection. Tom Reimer claims that a 1cm gap in the doors of three wine chillers allowed warm air to enter, causing condensation and mould on his prized bottles. This collection, housed in his £8 million Marylebone flat, included rare vintages like 1982 Château Mouton Rothschild and 2012 Petrus, which are now significantly devalued due to label damage and potential cork issues.

Reimer is seeking over £550,000 in damages, arguing that the mould has drastically reduced the collection’s worth. Experts suggest that damaged labels can lead to a steep drop in resale value, as collectors are wary of compromised wines. The fridge supplier, International Food Services Equipment, contests the claim, asserting that the design was standard and that the damage may have resulted from the coolers being turned off due to noise.

The case highlights the vulnerabilities in high-value asset storage, particularly for collectors who rely on precise environmental controls. If the court sides with Reimer, it could set a precedent for liability in similar cases involving luxury items and their storage conditions.

As the trial unfolds, the implications for both collectors and suppliers in the luxury market are significant, raising questions about the responsibilities of equipment manufacturers in safeguarding valuable collections.
