A Soldier’s Legacy: The Return of a Family Heirloom

Stan Drew, a World War II soldier who died before meeting his daughter, has had his cigarette case returned to his family 80 years later. Discovered by Dutch metal detectorist Filip Krapels in a field near the Belgian border, the case bears a bullet hole, symbolising the soldier’s tragic fate during the Normandy campaign in 1944.

The emotional reunion took place at the Royal Welsh Regimental Museum, where Drew’s daughter, Diane Owen, expressed her shock and gratitude. She reflected on how this tangible piece of her father’s history brings him closer to her, despite the decades of separation. The case will be displayed at the museum, serving as a poignant reminder of the personal stories behind wartime sacrifices.

This discovery highlights the often-overlooked narratives of soldiers like Stan, who were ordinary individuals caught in extraordinary circumstances. The cigarette case not only represents Drew’s life but also connects to the broader history of countless servicemen who made the ultimate sacrifice.

As the case is loaned to the museum, it stands as a testament to the enduring impact of war on families and the importance of remembering those who served. The story of Stan Drew reminds us that behind every name on a memorial lies a unique life and legacy, waiting to be uncovered and honoured.
