A striking new sculpture titled “Lady In Blue” has been unveiled on Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth, designed by New York artist Tschabalala Self. Standing five metres tall, the sculpture represents a contemporary ‘everywoman’, aiming to resonate with the diverse individuals who frequent the iconic square.
The artwork replaces the previous installation and is crafted from bronze, with a vibrant blue dress and lapis lazuli-inspired jewellery. Self’s intention is to depict a relatable figure, embodying ambition and optimism as she strides into the future, reflecting the spirit of London as a global metropolis.
This installation is part of an ongoing initiative to showcase world-class art in Trafalgar Square, with new pieces commissioned every two years. The Fourth Plinth has become a platform for contemporary artists, and Self’s work is expected to spark discussions about the role of women in society and the significance of everyday experiences.
As London continues to evolve, “Lady In Blue” serves as a reminder of the importance of representation in public spaces, inviting viewers to engage with contemporary art and consider the narratives of women in urban life.
