High Waste Collection Fees Linked to Increased Fly-Tipping in Wrexham

Wrexham’s waste collection fees are among the highest in Wales, with charges reaching £57.50 for a single bulky item. This ‘postcode lottery’ in pricing may be driving residents to fly-tip, as they seek cheaper alternatives for disposing of unwanted items. Last year, Wales recorded a staggering 1.26 million incidents of fly-tipping, with Wrexham itself seeing 2,335 cases, ranking seventh in the country.

The council has invested in enforcement measures, including additional cameras, which have already contributed to a reduction in fly-tipping incidents this year. However, the disparity in waste collection fees across different councils raises concerns about accessibility and community cleanliness. While some areas offer free or low-cost services, others impose steep charges that deter proper waste disposal.

Mark Hall from Business Waste highlights the need for councils to maintain affordable waste collection services to prevent illegal dumping. He argues that accessible pricing is crucial for residents who cannot transport bulky items to recycling centres, ensuring that communities remain clean and safe.

As local authorities explore strategies to combat fly-tipping, the focus on equitable waste collection fees could play a significant role in reducing waste crime and improving neighbourhood quality. The ongoing issue underscores the importance of addressing financial barriers to responsible waste disposal.
