Heatwave Disrupts Rail Services Across England

As England faces persistent drought conditions, rail services are experiencing significant disruptions. South Western Railway (SWR) has announced timetable changes and reduced speeds due to the shrinking soil affecting railway embankments. Starting August 10, trains between Yeovil and Exeter will operate every two hours, and journeys from London Waterloo to Exeter may take up to 27 minutes longer.

This situation is not isolated; operators in the east of England are implementing similar measures. Network Rail has indicated that speed restrictions and altered timetables will be necessary until ground conditions improve. The clay soil, which typically retains moisture, has shrunk due to the lack of rainfall, causing track misalignments that necessitate slower speeds for safety.

The impact of these changes extends beyond just delays. With the UK entering its fourth heatwave of the year, the frequency of such disruptions may increase, affecting commuters and freight transport alike. Engineers are actively working to mitigate these effects by using tampers to adjust the track and adding ballast to maintain stability.

Lawrence Bowman from SWR highlighted the growing frequency of extreme weather events, noting that this is the second consecutive year of significant disruptions caused by hot, dry weather. As climate change continues to influence weather patterns, the rail industry may need to adapt further to ensure safety and reliability for passengers.
