With at least seven sites housing hazardous materials located within a dozen miles of the flames, the stakes are alarmingly high. One particularly concerning site is located in Saint-Medard-en-Jalles, just 12 miles from the nearest fire. This facility manufactures combustible materials for Ariane rockets, while another nearby site produces ammonium perchlorate, a chemical that can ignite explosively when exposed to heat.
Despite the French government’s assurances that defensive measures are in place, the unpredictability of wildfires raises significant concerns about safety. The situation is exacerbated by a new heatwave, pushing temperatures above 40°C and increasing fire risks across the region.
