Houthis Dismiss Claims of Shipping Fees in Red Sea

Yemen’s Houthi rebels have firmly denied reports suggesting they plan to impose fees on ships transiting the Red Sea. In a recent statement, the Houthi-run Humanitarian Operations Coordination Center clarified that passage through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait remains free and that any claims of fees are unfounded. This denial comes in the wake of a report indicating that the Houthis were considering such charges, potentially influenced by discussions with Iranian officials.

The Bab al-Mandeb Strait is a critical maritime route for global trade, linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. Any attempt to charge for passage could have significant implications, particularly for Saudi Arabia, which has increasingly relied on this route amid disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. The Houthis’ past actions against shipping in the region raise concerns about the stability of this vital chokepoint.

The situation is further complicated by the Houthis’ ongoing military activities in the Red Sea, which have escalated since the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict. A toll on this route could mirror Iran’s strategies in the Strait of Hormuz, potentially leading to increased tensions and military responses from regional powers.

In response to these threats, Saudi Arabia has initiated a 14-nation maritime coalition aimed at safeguarding navigation through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait and surrounding waters. This coalition underscores the strategic importance of the region and the potential economic impacts of any new maritime regulations proposed by the Houthis.
