The campaign’s message, “If in doubt, keep your dog out,” emphasizes the risks of strong currents, hidden debris, and toxic blue-green algae that can harm dogs. Many pet owners underestimate these hazards, with a survey indicating that a significant portion of dog owners are unaware of the dangers calm-looking water can present. This lack of awareness can lead to tragic outcomes, including fatalities.
Emma-Jane Thomas from Dogs Trust warns that even strong swimmers can face difficulties, and attempting to rescue a struggling dog can create a second emergency.
