New Campaign Highlights Dangers of Open Water for Dogs

As summer heats up, many families are flocking to open bodies of water, unaware of the hidden dangers these locations pose to their pets. Dogs Trust has launched a campaign urging dog owners to be vigilant, especially around lakes, rivers, and the sea, where incidents involving dogs have surged. Recent data reveals a 39% increase in dog-related water incidents in the UK, with many occurring during the warmer months.

The campaign’s message, “If in doubt, keep your dog out,” emphasizes the risks of strong currents, hidden debris, and toxic blue-green algae that can harm dogs. Many pet owners underestimate these hazards, with a survey indicating that a significant portion of dog owners are unaware of the dangers calm-looking water can present. This lack of awareness can lead to tragic outcomes, including fatalities.

Emma-Jane Thomas from Dogs Trust warns that even strong swimmers can face difficulties, and attempting to rescue a struggling dog can create a second emergency. Instead, owners should call their dogs to safety or contact emergency services for assistance. The campaign aims to ensure that both dogs and their owners can enjoy outdoor activities safely.

With the rise in dog-related incidents, it’s crucial for pet owners to educate themselves about the potential risks associated with open water. By spreading awareness, Dogs Trust hopes to prevent accidents and ensure a safer environment for pets and their families during the summer months.
