Surge in Illegal Working Arrests Raises Concerns Over Labour’s Immigration Policy

The Home Office has reported a dramatic increase in arrests for illegal working, with numbers doubling since Labour took office in July 2024. Over 17,000 arrests have been made, marking a 122% rise compared to the previous two years. This surge reflects a significant escalation in immigration raids, with the first half of 2026 witnessing a record number of enforcement actions.

The implications of these figures extend beyond mere statistics. Opposition parties argue that the rise in illegal working opportunities may incentivise more migrants to attempt perilous crossings into the UK. The Labour government faces criticism for allegedly fostering an environment that encourages illegal immigration, with calls for stricter penalties against employers who hire undocumented workers.

In response to the growing issue, the Home Office is increasing penalties for companies found employing illegal workers. From October, employers in the gig economy could face fines of up to £60,000 per illegal worker, alongside potential prison sentences. This shift aims to deter businesses from exploiting vulnerable workers and to reinforce legal hiring practices.

As the crackdown intensifies, the long-term effects on the labour market and migrant behaviour remain to be seen. The government’s approach may reshape the landscape of employment in sectors heavily reliant on migrant labour, potentially leading to labour shortages in certain industries if illegal working is effectively curtailed.
