New Traffic Cameras Set to Fine Motorists in Bradford

Bradford Council is set to implement new moving traffic enforcement cameras starting August 17, targeting specific junctions where traffic violations have been frequent. Motorists ignoring road restrictions could face fines of up to £70, although a six-month grace period will allow for warnings instead of penalties for first-time offenders. This initiative aims to enhance road safety and reduce congestion, particularly at busy intersections known for rule-breaking.

The cameras will be installed at two key locations: the Shipley Airedale Road and Leeds Road junction, enforcing a no right turn, and the Godwin Street and Sunbridge Road junction, monitoring a yellow box to prevent blockages. The technology used is similar to that employed for bus lanes and speed limits, utilising Automatic Number Plate Recognition.

Importantly, the council emphasises that these measures do not introduce new traffic rules but enforce existing ones that are clearly signposted. If compliance improves over a year, the cameras may be removed, reflecting a focus on long-term behavioural change rather than immediate revenue generation.

Revenue from fines will be reinvested into transport and road safety improvements, as mandated by law. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance road safety for all users, including pedestrians and cyclists, while addressing persistent traffic issues in the city.
