Myanmar’s Leader Seeks Regional Acceptance Amid Ongoing Isolation

Min Aung Hlaing, Myanmar’s junta chief, recently visited Thailand in a bid to gain legitimacy on the international stage. This visit, marked by ceremonial receptions, is part of his strategy to reshape perceptions of his regime following years of diplomatic isolation since the 2021 coup. Despite the pomp, experts suggest that his efforts to secure acceptance from ASEAN members face significant hurdles, particularly due to ongoing civil conflict and human rights abuses.

The backdrop of his visit includes a brutal civil war that has resulted in substantial loss of life and displacement. While Hlaing aims to leverage Thailand’s influence within ASEAN to bolster his position, the bloc has not officially recognised his government, insisting on progress towards peace in Myanmar. The lack of endorsement from ASEAN complicates Hlaing’s attempts to portray his administration as legitimate.

Economic engagement is a key focus of Hlaing’s outreach, with Thailand being a major trade partner. His administration is keen on fostering bilateral trade relations, which could help stabilize Myanmar’s economy and support his regime. However, analysts warn that this approach primarily benefits Hlaing and the military elite rather than the general population suffering under ongoing conflict.

As Hlaing continues to seek international legitimacy, the implications for Myanmar’s citizens remain dire. The international community’s cautious stance reflects a broader skepticism about the military’s commitment to genuine reform, raising questions about the future of democracy and human rights in the country.
