Kurdish Region Faces Economic Crisis Amid US-Iran Conflict

Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdish region is grappling with severe economic fallout as the ongoing US-Iran conflict escalates. The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) reports a staggering 70% drop in trade, primarily due to missile and drone attacks that have targeted both military and civilian infrastructure. This situation has compounded existing financial difficulties, as the region struggles with salary payments and disputes with Baghdad over oil revenues.

The KRG’s Prime Minister, Masrour Barzani, highlighted the unjustifiable nature of these attacks, which have resulted in significant casualties and damage to essential services. The economic impact is profound, with losses estimated at over $1 billion, further destabilizing a region already facing chronic financial issues.

Moreover, the conflict has drawn the Kurdish region into a broader geopolitical struggle, with Iranian-backed militias launching attacks from within Iraq. This has raised concerns about security and governance, as these groups operate outside the control of the Iraqi government, creating a volatile environment for both local residents and foreign investments.

As the situation unfolds, the Kurdish region’s reliance on oil exports is jeopardized, with the Iraqi Ministry of Oil declaring force majeure on production due to disruptions. This not only threatens the Kurdish economy but also has implications for Iraq’s overall stability, as the nation grapples with the repercussions of a conflict that it did not choose to engage in.
