Ukraine’s Izmail port has been struck by Russian forces, igniting a fire and causing damage to vital infrastructure. This attack comes amid a backdrop of intensified missile strikes from Russia, which have been particularly deadly, with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy highlighting a critical shortage of Patriot interceptor missiles necessary to defend against these threats.
Zelenskyy has called for the United States to supply Ukraine with at least 5% of its stock of Patriot interceptors to help the country endure the winter and counteract the barrage of missiles. Currently, Ukraine has reported only 1% of what is needed, while Russian missile launches have surged, complicating the defensive efforts.
The situation is dire, as Ukraine struggles to intercept the increasing number of ballistic missiles, which are much harder to defend against than other types of attacks. As the war in Ukraine continues to evolve, the need for adequate air defence systems becomes crucial, not just for military purposes but also for civilian protection.
With the ongoing conflict and the US’s involvement in other military operations, the supply of interceptors is uncertain. This raises significant concerns about Ukraine’s ability to safeguard its citizens and infrastructure, potentially leading to higher civilian casualties and further damage to the economy.
