Eclipse Eye Damage: What to Watch For

As millions enjoyed the recent solar eclipse, eye experts are warning of potential damage from viewing it without proper protection. Symptoms of solar retinopathy, which can occur from staring at the sun, may not appear immediately, making it crucial for individuals to be vigilant in the hours following the event.

The retina, responsible for sharp vision, can be harmed by the intense light and ultraviolet radiation emitted by the sun. Unlike a burn, which is painful, retinal damage often goes unnoticed until vision changes manifest, such as blurred vision or dark spots in the central field of sight.

Historically, during the last total eclipse in 1999, many individuals suffered lasting eye damage, prompting concerns about public awareness and safety measures. Experts stress that only specially designed solar eclipse glasses should be used, as ordinary sunglasses do not provide adequate protection.

If you suspect eye damage, seek immediate medical attention. Local opticians are equipped to perform retinal scans and can refer patients to eye specialists if necessary. Awareness and prompt action are key to preventing long-term vision issues following such celestial events.
