Bluetongue Virus Threatens UK Livestock Amid Climate Change

The UK is facing a worsening bluetongue outbreak, with the chief veterinary officer warning that the virus is likely here to stay. As warmer summers become more frequent, the conditions for the spread of bluetongue, which is transmitted by midges, are expected to increase. Currently, 395 farms have reported cases, predominantly in Devon and Cornwall, raising concerns for farmers and livestock health.

Dr. Christine Middlemiss highlighted the urgent need for vaccination, noting that while Europe has been vaccinating at higher rates, the UK is experiencing supply bottlenecks. Farmers are encouraged to order vaccines promptly to protect their livestock from severe symptoms, including lethargy and mouth ulcers, which can lead to death.

The situation has escalated to the point where agricultural shows are banning livestock to prevent further spread. With the virus’s rapid rise in cases, calls for an emergency fund to support affected farmers are growing. The chief vet’s remarks underscore the necessity for a sustained vaccination programme to manage this persistent threat.

As climate change continues to influence disease patterns, the bluetongue virus may become a long-term challenge for UK agriculture, necessitating ongoing vigilance and proactive measures from farmers and veterinary services alike.
