NSW Launches Major Gun Buyback Following Bondi Attack

In a historic move, New South Wales (NSW) will initiate Australia’s largest gun buyback scheme in over 30 years, starting November 2. This response follows the tragic Bondi beach terror attack, where 15 lives were lost. The buyback aims to remove firearms from circulation and tighten gun ownership laws, limiting individuals to four firearms, with exceptions for certain professions.

The first phase of the buyback will compensate owners for various firearms, including $1,000 for revolvers and $850 for semi-automatic handguns. This initiative is expected to affect approximately 274,000 registered firearms in NSW, which represents about 24% of the total.

Critics, including the state’s opposition leader, have raised concerns regarding the scheme’s costs and the fixed compensation rates not reflecting market values. Moreover, the national buyback plan faces challenges, as several states, including Queensland and Victoria, have opted out of participation, complicating the implementation of a cohesive national firearms agreement.

This buyback reflects a significant shift in public policy regarding gun control in Australia, aiming to enhance safety and prevent similar tragedies. However, the effectiveness of these measures will depend on widespread compliance and the political will to enforce stricter gun laws across all states.
