Public Health Wales is urging parents in Barry to vaccinate their children against Hepatitis A as the virus spreads in the community. Since December, there have been 11 confirmed cases, highlighting the need for immediate action to prevent further transmission.
The vaccination campaign targets children aged five and under, who are particularly vulnerable to the virus. Hepatitis A can often be asymptomatic in young children, making it crucial for parents to take advantage of the free vaccines offered at Barry Hospital from August 18 to August 22, 2026.
Dr Chris Williams, a consultant epidemiologist, emphasised that vaccinating this age group is essential to control the outbreak. The virus spreads easily, and without intervention, it could lead to more severe health issues, particularly for those with underlying conditions.
Parents can expect to receive notifications from Cardiff and Vale University Health Board regarding the vaccination. The vaccine is safe and effective, already administered to hundreds in the area, and is part of routine travel vaccinations in many countries.
