New 24-Hour Free Bus Travel for Disabled People in England

Starting April 1, disabled individuals in England will benefit from 24-hour free bus travel, a significant change from the current restrictions that limit travel to weekdays between 09:30 and 23:00. This policy aims to enhance accessibility, allowing disabled people to attend work and social events without time constraints.

The initiative is expected to impact around one million people, addressing long-standing barriers that have hindered their mobility. Campaigners have welcomed this move, highlighting its potential to improve daily life and reduce the cost of living for disabled individuals.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who previously implemented similar changes in Greater Manchester, emphasised the importance of equitable access to public transport. The funding for this £60 million scheme will come from existing departmental budgets, raising questions about its long-term sustainability.

As the UK government seeks to align its policies with those in Scotland and Wales, this change could signal a shift towards more inclusive transport policies nationwide, potentially influencing future legislation and funding priorities in public transport.
