Changes to GCSE and A-level Subjects in Northern Ireland

The Northern Ireland exams board, CCEA, has announced the discontinuation of several GCSE and A-level subjects, including German and Economics, by the end of the decade. This decision is based on low student enrolment and the long-term sustainability of these qualifications. The final courses for GCSEs will begin in 2028, with awarding concluding in 2030, while A-levels will follow a year later.

This move raises concerns about the future of language learning in Northern Ireland. With German being the only language that students can start at age 11 but not continue to GCSE, educators fear it sends a negative message about the importance of languages in the workforce. Employers have consistently highlighted the value of language skills, particularly in sectors like technology and engineering.

The implications extend beyond individual students; they may affect Northern Ireland’s economic ties with Germany, Europe’s largest economy. Knowledge of German can open doors to study and employment opportunities in a country that has strong trade links with the UK and Ireland.

Critics argue that this decision could limit students’ perspectives and future career options. As the education landscape shifts, schools may need to seek alternative qualifications from other exam boards to continue offering these subjects, potentially complicating the educational experience for students and educators alike.
