Escalation in Syria: Israeli Strikes Raise Tensions

Recent Israeli airstrikes on the Abu al-Duhur airbase in northwestern Syria have sparked condemnation from both Syria and the United States. The strikes, which targeted an unused military facility, are seen as an unnecessary escalation that could destabilise the region further. US envoy Tom Barrack expressed concerns that such actions do not contribute to regional stability, highlighting the delicate balance in Syria following the ousting of President Bashar Assad.

The airbase, reportedly used for training by Syria’s interim government, was struck despite its long-standing disuse as a military base. This raises questions about Israel’s intentions and its ongoing military operations in Syria, which have included hundreds of strikes since December 2024. The timing of these strikes, coinciding with a Turkish military delegation’s visit, suggests a strategic move to undermine efforts to reactivate the base and strengthen Syria’s military capabilities.

Syria’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attacks as unjustified aggression, urging the international community to respond firmly against Israel’s actions. The ongoing conflict has seen Israel assert its right to maintain a security zone in southern Syria, further complicating the situation. The strikes could provoke a stronger response from Syria and its allies, potentially escalating military tensions in the region.

As the situation develops, the implications for regional stability remain significant. The strikes not only threaten to destabilise Syria but also challenge the fragile alliances formed in the wake of Assad’s ousting. The international community’s response will be crucial in determining the future dynamics of power in the region.
