The European Union is ramping up its maritime security efforts to protect critical underwater infrastructure, which is increasingly vulnerable to sabotage and cyber threats. With 99% of global data transmitted through undersea cables, any disruption could have catastrophic economic consequences, affecting communication and energy supplies across the continent.
Recent incidents, including the Nord Stream explosion and damage to cables between Finland and Germany, have highlighted the urgent need for enhanced security measures. In response, the EU updated its Maritime Security Strategy in 2023, focusing on innovation and collaboration to combat both physical and cyber threats.
A significant component of this strategy is the launch of the Industrial Maritime Strategy, which aims to bolster the resilience of the EU’s maritime sector. This includes investments in advanced detection technologies and the Counter-Drone Action Plan, which targets threats from unmanned systems in maritime environments.
As the EU allocates €325 billion for defence projects, including those aimed at seabed surveillance, the implications for national security and economic stability are profound.
