Calls to Ban L-Plated Delivery Riders in London

The London Assembly is urging the government to prohibit delivery riders using L plates from operating in the city. This follows concerns about safety, as these riders often only complete a one-day Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course, which does not equate to full driving qualifications. Critics argue that allowing these riders on the roads poses a significant danger, as they may not be adequately prepared for commercial driving.

Currently, riders can operate mopeds up to 125CC with L plates, which can reach speeds of 60-65 mph. The CBT can be repeated indefinitely, allowing some riders to work for years without passing a full motorcycle test. The Department for Transport is now reviewing this policy, which has been a point of contention for Mayor Sadiq Khan and other officials.

The motion to ban these riders highlights a growing concern over road safety and the qualifications required for commercial drivers. Assembly Member Thomas Turrell emphasized that the current system allows individuals to believe they are ready to drive professionally, despite lacking comprehensive training. This situation raises questions about the adequacy of existing regulations governing delivery services in London.

If the government acts on this recommendation, it could lead to significant changes in how delivery services operate, potentially impacting employment for many riders. The outcome may also influence broader discussions about road safety and the qualifications necessary for commercial driving in the UK.
