Starlink’s Limited Impact on Vietnam’s Internet Freedom

Starlink’s entry into Vietnam aims to enhance connectivity, particularly in remote areas. However, the service’s potential to promote free speech is severely limited by the government’s stringent censorship laws. Despite the promise of better internet access, the Vietnamese authorities maintain strict control over online content, ensuring that Starlink must operate within these constraints.

The service, while beneficial for rural communities lacking robust infrastructure, comes at a high cost. With monthly fees starting at €37 and hardware costs around €284, many rural households may find it unaffordable. Instead, shared connections at schools and clinics may be the most practical use of Starlink in these areas.

Vietnam’s internet landscape is already extensive, with a high percentage of the population online. Yet, the government’s commitment to maintaining a tight grip on digital expression means that Starlink’s arrival will not necessarily lead to greater freedom of speech. The state has a history of enforcing compliance from foreign tech companies, which could extend to Starlink.

As the trial progresses, the focus will remain on adhering to national security principles, limiting the service’s ability to function as an alternative to state-controlled internet. This highlights the ongoing tension between technological advancement and governmental oversight in one of Southeast Asia’s most monitored online environments.
