Private School Teacher Banned for Crystal Meth Use

A teacher at a prestigious north London private school has been banned from teaching after admitting to smoking crystal meth. Charles Miles, 64, claimed he used the drug to ‘relax’ during his nearly 40 years at Dwight School. His substance use came to light when police visited his home for an unrelated issue, leading to a Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) investigation.

While there were no reports of harm to students, the tribunal found that Miles’ actions constituted serious misconduct. The panel noted that public confidence in teachers could be severely undermined if such cases are not treated seriously. Miles insisted his drug use was a private matter, separate from his professional responsibilities.

The school acted promptly, suspending him from work as soon as concerns were raised. They emphasized that his conduct occurred outside of school hours and did not impact student safety. However, the TRA ruled that his limited insight into the implications of his actions warranted an indefinite ban.

Miles can apply for a review of the ban in five years. This case highlights the importance of maintaining professional standards among educators and the potential repercussions of personal choices on public trust in the teaching profession.
