Greenland’s Truth Commission to Address Dark Chapter of Forced Contraception

Greenland’s government is set to establish a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate a troubling history of forced contraception imposed by Danish authorities from the 1960s to the 1990s. This initiative comes after experts presented conflicting reports on whether the actions constituted genocide, highlighting the complexity of the issue and the need for a thorough examination of human rights violations.

The commission aims to shed light on the experiences of over 4,000 Indigenous women and girls who were subjected to contraceptive measures without consent, often at a young age. This dark chapter has resurfaced painful memories for many victims, who are now seeking acknowledgment and healing from the trauma inflicted upon them.

Greenland’s Prime Minister has expressed a commitment to work collaboratively with Denmark to address these historical injustices. The Danish parliament has also taken steps to allow victims to seek compensation, signalling a shift towards accountability and recognition of past wrongs.

As the commission begins its work, it may not only provide closure for the victims but also foster a broader dialogue about colonial legacies and Indigenous rights, potentially influencing future policies and societal attitudes in both Greenland and Denmark.
