Burst Pipes in Heatwaves: A Growing Concern for Water Supply

This summer’s record heat has led to a surge in burst water mains across the UK, particularly in the West. Prolonged dry spells have caused ground movement, putting immense strain on aging pipes. Water companies are now facing a dual challenge: managing immediate supply issues while also upgrading infrastructure to cope with climate change.

Wessex Water has reported a staggering 109% increase in burst incidents between June and July, leading to significant disruptions, including a major road closure in Cheltenham. The utility is ramping up leak detection and repair teams in response, but the underlying issue remains: much of the water network is outdated and ill-equipped for today’s climate conditions.

Experts emphasize that without substantial investment in modernising the infrastructure, the UK risks exacerbating water supply challenges. The National Infrastructure Commission’s recommendations from 2018 to reduce leakage and build new supply systems are more urgent than ever as demand surges.

As hosepipe bans come into effect, residents may need to rethink water usage. Innovations like rain harvesting could play a vital role in mitigating future shortages. Without action, the impacts of climate change on water supply are likely to worsen, affecting daily life across the region.
