Iran Calls on US to Revive Ceasefire Agreement Amid Rising Tensions

Iran is urging the United States to honour its commitments under a lapsed memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at de-escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. Following recent military exchanges, Iranian officials assert that they are prepared to return to the terms of the June agreement, which included a ceasefire and negotiations to end hostilities.

The MoU, brokered by Pakistan and Qatar, was intended to facilitate a 60-day negotiation period, during which Iran would clear mines from the Strait and the US would lift sanctions and cease its naval blockade. However, the agreement quickly deteriorated, leading to renewed strikes and heightened conflict.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian highlighted the need for the US to reciprocate its commitments, emphasizing that the return to the MoU is crucial for regional stability. The recent escalation has raised concerns among neighbouring countries, with calls for a diplomatic resolution to prevent further conflict.

As tensions remain high, the potential for a renewed diplomatic effort is critical. Regional players, including Qatar and Pakistan, are advocating for a peaceful solution to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route, underscoring the broader implications for global trade and security.
