European foreign ministers have pledged solidarity in response to a surge in hybrid warfare tactics attributed to Russia. This commitment was solidified during a recent summit in Wicklow, Ireland, where ministers from various nations, including the UK, gathered to discuss security concerns following a drone incident in Germany.
The drone, intercepted at Leipzig airport, was carrying military-grade explosives, prompting Germany to directly blame the Kremlin. This incident highlights a broader pattern of destabilisation efforts by Russia, as noted by German officials who linked it to previous hybrid operations.
British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband emphasized the importance of unity among European nations, recalling past Russian attacks on UK soil. He warned that such hybrid tactics aim to sow division but affirmed that they will not succeed in undermining support for Ukraine.
As discussions continue, proposals are emerging to use immobilised Russian assets to aid Ukraine, reflecting a proactive approach to countering Russian aggression. The urgency of these measures is underscored by the increasing frequency of hybrid attacks, with Lithuania reporting a quadrupling of such incidents over the past year.
